Retro TV Match Of The Day Jimmy Hill T-Shirt

Match of the Day was first broadcast to a very limited audience on BBC2 at 6.30pm on August 22nd, 1964, introduced by and with commentary from the great Kenneth Wolstenholme, famous for his 'they think it's all over' quote towards the end of the 1966 World Cup Final.

Liverpool were the defending division one champions and Bill Shankly's side opened their campaign with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Arsenal, Roger Hunt scoring the first-ever goal on the programme. The Reds were also featured in the first match broadcast in colour on November 15th 1969, a 2-0 win at Anfield over West Ham, Chris Lawler and Bobby Graham on target.

Former footballer (Brentford and Fulham) and manager (Coventry City), as well as chairman of the Professional Footballers' Association when the £20 maximum wage was abolished in 1961, Jimmy Hill was the host of the show for most of the 1980s, with Des Lynam taking over the role in 1988.
