The 1991 League Cup Final was an exciting match decided in favour of Second Division Sheffield Wednesday against top-flight Manchester United by John Sheridan's solitary strike. Ex-United boss Ron Atkinson was in charge of the Owls and there was cause for double celebration at the end of the season as the club was promoted back to Division One.
In season 2022-23, after amassing a record points total and still failing to gain automatic promotion to the Championship, Wednesday looked dead and buried after losing the first-leg of the play-offs 4-0. But a dramatic 2nd leg at Hillsborough saw the Owls through to Wembley where Josh Windass earned the club its fully-deserved promotion.
