Newcastle United 1982 Kevin Keegan's Debut Teletext Mug

A week before the start of the season, Newcastle United announced the signing of England superstar Kevin Keegan from Southampton. The 31-year-old stated the need for a fresh challenge as his motivation for leaving the Dell and though he also had the option of joining Manchester United, the lure of the north-east proved too strong.

Keegan said: "My father was a Geordie and he always used to talk about Newcastle. I haven't felt so excited for a long time - in fact, since I first met Bill Shankly. If we don't win promotion at the end of the season, I will personally feel that I have failed."

Keegan made his debut at a packed St James's Park against Queen's Park Rangers, a team which had given a great account of themselves against Tottenham in the FA Cup Final back in May. Having scored for Liverpool on his League debut in 1971 and for Southampton ten years later, he completed his hat-trick just on the hour-mark to get the Magpies' promotion push off to a flyer.

Despite having dropped down a division, new England manager Bobby Robson was amongst the spectators to see Keegan's first match and said afterwards: "Kevin took his goal like a true international player. Trevor Brooking went down to the second division with West Ham but still kept his place in the international squad."
