Alex Stepney was the sole survivor from Manchester United’s 1968 European Cup-winning
side and had seen the club relegated in season 1973-74 season before gaining promotion
back to the top flight under the dynamic management of Tommy Docherty. Liverpool came
into the match on course for a unique treble, having already secured the Division One League
title and earned a place in the European Cup Final, but it was United who came out on top
after a flurry of three goals in five minutes in the early stages of the second-half.
