Liverpool won the trophy for the second successive season, coming from behind with two goals from Ronnie Whelan and, who else, the prolific Ian Rush.

Whelan was a bargain £35,000 buy from Irish side Home Farm in 1979 and over the next fifteen years he was instrumental to Liverpool’s huge success. He scored two goals in this League Cup victory and was also on target in the following year’s Final, as the Reds beat Manchester United, Bob Paisley’s last trophy before he retired.
