Howard Kendall was signed by Everton boss Harry Catterick for a fee of £80,000 March, 1967, to the dismay of Liverpool boss Bill Shankly who had been a long-time admirer. He joined the club the day before the famous FA Cup tie with Liverpool which was watched by 64,851 fans at Goodison and another 40,149 via CCTV at Anfield, but was ineligible to play and made his debut a week later against Southampton.
Howard was a key member of the team which won the Division One title in 1969-70, formed part of the revered midfield trio of Ball, Harvey and Kendall. He was transferred to Birmingham in 1974 as part of the deal which brought Bob Latchford to Goodison Park, but returned to the club as manager ahead of the 1981-82 season and delivered the most successful period in the club's history until his departure to Athletic Bilbao in the summer of 1987.
