Undoubtedly the greatest Everton player of all-time, William Ralph “Dixie” Dean made 431 appearances for the club in the Football League and the FA Cup, scoring 377 goals and never once being booked or sent off.
Signed from Tranmere Rovers in 1925 for a fee of £3,000, and after recovering from a near-fatal road accident the following summer, over thirteen years he broke record-after-record, most famously when his forty shots and twenty headers set a new benchmark for the number of League goals scored in a single season.
The book also charts the turbulent early 1930s period when, in four successive seasons, Everton were relegated to Division Two for the first time, secured immediate promotion back to the top flight, became Division One champions again, then won the FA Cup, with Dixie Dean becoming the club’s first-ever Number 9.
