After taking over from Ron Saunders earlier in the season, manager Tony Barton guided Aston Villa to European Cup glory. Peter Withe scored the only goal but the match is also remembered for the early injury to goalkeeper Jimmy Rimmer and the fantastic performance of his replacement, Nigel Spink.
