Season 1960-61 saw the inaugural League Cup competition and although all clubs were eligible, not all entered. Only a week after winning the trophy with a stirring second-leg fightback, Aston Villa began the defence of the crown in the 1961-62 season. Until 1967, the Final was played over two-legs.
