Wrexham and Arsenal had met only once before, in an FA Cup quarter-final in 1978 at the Racecourse Ground. Then in the Third Division, the Welsh side had caused a major upset on the way to reaching the last eight by trouncing top-flight Newcastle United 4-1.

In front of over 25,000 spectators, Malcolm MacDonald gave the Gunners a first-half lead before Dixie McNeil equalised midway through the second period. Alan Sunderland and Willie Young then restored the visitors' advantage before Graham Whittle made the final score 3-2. Terry Neill's team reached the final that season, where they lost 1-0 to Ipswich Town.

On the occasion of this match, Wrexham were in the Fourth Division while George Graham's Arsenal were defending First Division champions, though they had drawn one and lost two of the previous three League games and stood in seventh spot in the table. As he had done fourteen years before, Mickey Thomas, now aged thirty-seven, took his place in the home side's starting eleven.

The London side dominated the majority of the match, squandering numerous opportunities to build on the one-goal advantage they enjoyed going into the final ten minutes. From a free-kick on the edge of the area, veteran Thomas smashed the ball home to level the tie and two minutes later Steve Watkin squeezed the winner passed David Seaman for a famous victory.
