Liverpool could earn a second League and Cup
double with victory over Arsenal, having done so first
in 1986 before being denied in 1988 by Wimbledon.
To deprive the reigning champions, Arsenal would not
only have to end the twenty-four match unbeaten run
of their rivals, but do so by a two-goal margin, with
bookmakers William Hill offering odds of 7/1 on that.

The Friday night showdown was broadcast live to the
nation on ITV, with Elton Welsby and England boss
Bobby Robson in the studio at Anfield, and Brian
Moore and David Pleat in the commentary box.

The tension amongst the home supporters increased
early in the second half as Arsenal's Alan Smith

of the campaign. Then, in injury time, Lee Dixon
launched a long ball to Smith who turned it into the
path of Michael Thomas advancing on the penalty
area, with the dramatic title-winning goal which
resulted superbly captured by commentator Moore.
