A year after Celtic became the first Scottish club to win the European Cup, Manchester United became the first English club to do so in a dramatic final at Wembley. It was a particularly poignant success, coming as it did just a few months after the tenth anniversary of the Munich air disaster which so nearly claimed the lives of manager Matt Busby and team captain Bobby Charlton.
