1984 v Oxford United
For many Evertonians, this was the night it all began. Manager Howard Kendall appeared to be on borrowed time after a poor run of League results and when the Blues went down 1-0 in this League Cup tie to opponents two divisions below them, the end for him seemed nigh. But an underhit backpass by Oxford's Kevin Brock was intercepted by Adrian Heath who levelled with nine minutes remaining. Everton thumped Oxford 4-1 a week later and then advanced to the Final, ultimately losing to Liverpool.
But the Kendall era had begun and the season culiminated with a 2-0 FA Cup Final victory over Watford followed by two League titles and a European Cup-Winners Cup Final success. For a few brief years, Everton were one of the top sides in Europe and only the Heysel disaster prevented the team fulfilling its maximum potential.
